United States - 21/04/08 2008-04-04 SGS sponsors the new Advanced Mineralogy Research Center in Golden (CO) Colorado School of Mines celebrated the grand opening of the Advanced Mineralogy Research Center (AMRC) from 4 to 7 p.m. April 3 in the General Research Laboratory building,1310 Maple St., on the Mines campus in Golden. "The advanced Mineralogy Research Center embodies the university's emphasis on interdisciplinary research and education," said Karin Hoal, AMRC director. "Because of its focus on quantitative mineral characterization, the center will provide expertise in minerals, energy, the environment, materials, and health. Research and applications development in each of these areas brings diverse disciplines together in the center, where technology transfer and fresh insights feed new research activities." The AMRC will put Mines at the forefront of technology in quantitative mineralogy, serving a wide range of industries including planetary science, oil and gas, mining, health and environment and materials. The interdisciplinary applications of the center are enhanced by faculty from diverse departments whose research spans the School's strategic focus areas in earth, energy, materials and environment. The center will be home to a state-of-the-art QEMSCAN® system, contributed by Intellection Pty Ltd, an Australia-based corporation that develops analytics solutions for geoscience applications. A senior applications scientist from Intellection will work full time at the AMRC to facilitate start-up and to provide support for the lab personnel. In addition, Intellection provided a significant quantity of education-only licenses of "iDiscover ? software for use in various projects designed and implemented at the facility. Intellection will assist with maintaining the equipment and providing service to ensure that it is operating properly. "While there are many reasons that the establishment of the Advanced Mineralogy Research Center generates enthusiasm within both Mines and Intellection, perhaps the most prevailing is the exploration of new avenues to apply the QEMSCAN® technology from a research and education perspective," says Bob Williams, general manager, Intellection Corp., Americas region. Other industry sponsors include Freeport McMoRan, Whiting Petroleum, Hazen Research, SGS and EOG Resources. Founded in 1874, Colorado School of Mines was established to serve the needs of the local mining industry. Today, the School has an international reputation for excellence in both engineering education and the applied sciences with special expertise in the development and stewardship of the Earth's resources.
