CANADIAN ON-FARM FOOD SAFETY AUDITOR TRAINING COURSE – MODULE 2 (E-LEARNING)

Introduction

The Canadian On-Farm Food Safety Auditor Training Course has been developed by the Canadian On-Farm Food Safety Working Group to provide basic training in food safety and auditing for persons engaged in auditing the national on-farm food safety programs. Originally developed in 2000 as a five-day on-site training course, it was revamped in 2006 to take advantage of advances in Internet based training and to provide greater access at lower cost to this important component of the Canadian approach to on-farm food safety.

The course content has been developed taking into account the guidelines for HACCP training established by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the auditing principles established by the international standards system. The course is designed to meet the generic auditor training requirements of the National On-Farm Food Safety Recognition Program that has been established by CFIA and the provincial and territorial governments.

The new internet-based Canadian On-Farm Food Safety Auditor Training Course now has two modules.

Module 1:

Basics of HACCP-Based On-Farm Food Safety provides an introduction the Canadian approach to on-farm food safety, the basic concepts of food safety (food microbiology, microorganisms, toxicology), various food quality programs, HACCP principles and its application on-farm.

Module 2:

Basics of On-Farm Food Safety Auditing provide an introduction to the basic principles of auditing and the application in the context of on-farm food safety programs.

The Canadian On-Farm Food Safety Auditor Training Course is offered in both official languages. Module 1 is offered in French by L Institut de technologie agroalimentaire de Saint-Hyacinthe [website] and in English by Lakeland College. Module 2 is offered in English by SGS North America.

The two modules together constitute the complete introductory training course. While they may be taken in any order, students may find it advisable to take Module 1 first.

Persons who have successfully completed this course will also need to meet other education and training requirements prior to being accepted by one of the national on-farm food safety programs as an on-farm food safety auditor. Each national program offers a commodity-specific course that provides training on the national program requirements, audit protocols, reporting, bio-security, etc. Information on these requirements and training courses must be obtained from the national programs.

There are three exercises in the Module 2.

  • Exercise 1 – Auditing Fundamentals
  • Exercise 2 – Audit Technique
  • Exercise 3 – Audit Attributes and their Application

Once you enrolled into this e-Learning, you will receive an enrolment notification with a short orientation note. You can log on to see your assignments. You can proceed with the course, doing and submitting the assignments. Once all assignments are completed and marked, the system will generate a completion report. Based on the completion report result, SGS will issue the certificate.
